Looking Back: The Volvo 850, the Model that Reached for the Stars

You might not know it by name, but here at Volvo of Santa Monica, we bet you’re familiar with the iconic body shape of the Volvo 850 models. Launched in 1991 under the banner “A dynamic car with four world-firsts;” the four world-firsts were the transverse 5-cylinder engine, the Delta-link rear axle, the integrated side-impact protection system, and the self-adjusting front seat belt. Last month celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Volvo 850, and we want to honor our roots with a look back at the model that reached for the stars.

The Volvo 850 Series was born from Project Galaxy, and in 1993 it arrived with an estate model (wagon for us here in the U.S.). The 850 Series later expanded with various engine options, and in 1994, it appeared on the racetrack in its wagon form, a big shock to audiences! 1996 saw the last production year for the 850 Series models, but the line underwent many major upgrades to eventually become the Volvo S70 (from the sedan models) or the V70 (from the estate models). Those two Volvos have since retired, but here’s a cool fact for your back pocket: a total of 1,360,522 cars were built in models originating from the 850 Series. So if you’re looking for a real legacy, there’s one for the books.

Here at Volvo Cars of Santa Monica, we enjoy celebrating our past almost as much we like talking about our new Volvo models. If you’re interested in starting a new chapter with a great Volvo vehicle, you’re invited to join us in our beautiful showroom, found on 1401 Santa Monica Blvd (during construction). Someone from our team of friendly sales associates will gladly answer any questions you may have, and when you find the perfect vehicle for you, make sure to take it for a test spin before discussing your financing options with our helpful finance experts.
